Elon Musk’s Ex Grimes Shares Support for His Daughter Vivian After Comments on Gender Identity

Grimes is weighing in on her ex Elon Musk’s controversial comments.
After the Tesla CEO criticized his daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson for coming out as transgender and seeking gender-affirming treatment, Grimes—with whom he shares children X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl and Techno Mechanicus—is standing by Vivian’s side.
As she wrote on X, formerly Twitter, July 25, “I love and am forever endlessly proud of Vivian.”
Grimes’ comment comes after Elon said he felt Vivian—whom he shares with ex-wife Justine Wilson in addition to late son Nevada Alexander Musk, Vivian's twin brother Griffin Musk, and 16-year-old triplets Kai Musk, Saxon Musk and Damian Musk—had been “killed” in his eyes by "the woke mind virus” for her decision to seek gender-affirming medical care.
"I was essentially tricked into signing documents," Elon told Daily Wire in the interview published July 23. "This was really before I had any understanding of what was going on, and we had COVID going on, so there was a lot of confusion."
"I was tricked into doing this," he continued, claiming he gave Vivian permission for the treatment only because he was told she "might commit suicide" if he didn't. "I lost my son, essentially."
But Vivian quickly fired back at her father’s comments.
“I think he was under the assumption that I wasn’t going to say anything and I would just let this go unchallenged,” the 20-year-old told NBC News in an interview published July 25. “Which I’m not going to do, because if you’re going to lie about me, like, blatantly to an audience of millions, I’m not just gonna let that slide.”
Vivian—who filed to change her name when she was a legal adult at the age 18—also highlighted her ability to make her own decisions about her identity and health.
“I would like to emphasize one thing: I am an adult. I am 20 years old. I am not a child,” she said. “My life should be defined by my own choices.”
Vivian also reflected on her estrangement with her father, which she says began long before she came out as transgender at age 16, and how he was “quick to anger” and only present for about 10% of her childhood.
“He is uncaring and narcissistic," she said, recalling an incident in the fourth grade where her father allegedly berated her for her tone of voice. "He was constantly yelling at me viciously because my voice was too high. It was cruel”
But while her relationship with her dad has become more than strained, Vivian expressed her gratitude for her mother.
“She’s very supportive,” she said of Justine. “I love her a lot.”
